Carols in the Park, 6pm on Friday 20th December

Don’t forget to come to the park this Friday evening at 6pm for Carols in the Park. It is a free community singing event with Luckwell Primary School choir, St Aldhelm’s Church choir and the Luckwell Festive Band.

There will be mince pies and mulled wine by way of refreshment. Soft drinks are also available. The profits from the sale of refreshments will be donated to the NSPCC.

With an eye to the winter weather, it will be a relatively short event, lasting less than one hour.

Repainting done, litter picked

Many thanks to the volunteers who helped over the weekend. The repainted swings and roundabout are looking very good. We are also rid of a large amount of litter which was exposed when the shrubs were cut back last week.

Working Party, Saturday 9th November 2013

We've changed the start time of tomorrow's working party from 9am to 2pm, because of the bad weather forecast.

We will be preparing the old play equipment for repainting. If we get a good enough dry interval, we are very much hoping then to do the painting at some point over the weekend. We will also be doing a litter pick. The park will be ‘open’ during the painting, but we think it’s best if young children are discouraged from attending.

Thank you in advance if you are able to help.

Carols in the Park

CAROLS IN THE PARK
On Friday 20th December at 6pm, we are putting on ‘Carols in the Park’, a community singing event to which all are welcome. Luckwell Primary School choir is taking part, as are the carol singers from St Aldhelm’s church. There will be seasonal refreshments.

CALLING MUSICIANS
Players of ‘outdoor’ instruments (wind and brass) are encouraged to form a small band which will accompany Carols in the Park. Adults and children of approximately Grade 4 standard and above are welcome to join, attending a couple of rehearsals to be scheduled for Tuesday or Thursday evenings in December. Please get in touch if you would like to take part.

This week at LImP, 4th November 2013

It’s a busy week for Luckwell Park. Here’s what’s in view:

Wednesday 6th November – Autumn trim begins
Thursday 7th November – LImP Open Meeting at 8pm
Saturday 9th November – Volunteer painting and litter picking, from 9am

Details below...

AUTUMN TRIM
The City Council’s park contractors, Quadron, are due to begin the park’s autumn haircut on Wednesday 6th November. As last year, they will be hacking back the laurel bushes and generally tidying up the other shrubs. Please encourage them as best you can!

OPEN MEETING
The next LImP meeting will be held in the Luckwell Pub at 8pm on Thursday 7th November. This is an open meeting and all are welcome.

PAINTING - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Could you spare some time to help repaint the older play equipment on Saturday 9th November, from 9am, weather permitting? We have some red and black paint for the famous ‘Sputnik’ roundabout and some yellow for the swings. The park will be ‘open’ during the painting, but we think it’s best if young children are discouraged from attending.

We are of course at the mercy of the weather, but we are hoping at least to rub down the old paintwork and look for a dry interval in which to do the actual painting. An update will be circulated on Friday evening. In any event, we’d also be grateful for any litter picking on the day. We’ll have the equipment.

If you have not already done so, please get in touch if you can help. Thank you in advance.

Update 23rd October 2013

PAINTING - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Could you spare some time to help repaint the older play equipment on Saturday 9th November, from 9am, weather permitting? We have some red paint for the famous ‘Sputnik’ roundabout and some yellow for the swings. The park will be ‘open’ during the painting, but we think it’s best if young children are discouraged from attending. If you’d rather not paint, we’d also be grateful for any litter picking that day. We’ll have the equipment.

Please get in touch if you can help. Thank you in advance.

BEDMINSTER WINTER LANTERN PARADE
The annual parade is taking place on the evening of Saturday 7th December. If last year’s event is anything to go by, it will be spectacular. If you, your family, or a group of friends would like to make a lantern and take part, you may wish to attend one of the public workshops as follows:

1. To make a simple lantern at Compass Point Children’s Centre 10-12 on Saturday 2nd November (ffi contact Lead Artist Alan May alanwmay@btinternet.com) OR
2. To make a musical instrument lantern at the ACTA centre, Gladstone Street over 3 Saturday mornings starting 16th November (ffi contact ACTA on 0117 953 2448).

Please bring ideas for what you would like to make, including perhaps drawings or photos for inspiration.

OPEN MEETING
The next LImP meeting will be held in the Luckwell Pub at 8pm on Thursday 7th November. This is an open meeting and all are welcome.

Update 6th October 2013

OPEN MEETING – Tuesday 8th October
The next LImP meeting will be held in the Luckwell Pub at 8pm on Tuesday 8th October. This is an open meeting and all are welcome.

GATE TO HARD COURT
The new gate from the play area to the hard court is due to be installed soon, marking the completion of this year’s round of improvements.

RAIN GARDEN
We have had a lot of questions about the profusion of weeds in the new Rain Garden area. This area was seeded with tall grasses in the summer, but they have unfortunately not established. It will be seeded again in the spring, but in the meantime it has been judged best to leave the weeds there. Believe it or not, they are performing an important function in stopping the play area from become boggy during the winter. In the new drainage scheme, the excess of ground water is piped to this area, from where it will then be drawn up by the tall grasses and evaporate; in the meantime, the weeds will do the same job for now.

PAINTING
We are arranging to re-paint the older play equipment – the famous Sputnik roundabout and the swings. Could you help with this?

AUTUMN TRIM
The park is due its autumn trim later this month and we’re looking forward to seeing the shrubs cut back again, after some very vigorous re-growth over the past year.

Open Meeting – Thursday 5th September

The next LImP meeting will be held in the Luckwell Pub at 8pm on Thursday 5th September.  This is an open meeting and all are welcome.

Open Meeting – Tuesday 6th August

There will be an event in the park to celebrate the improvements on Friday 19th July from 3.30-5pm.

FREE ICE CREAM
Could you offer to help with the event either setting up, during, or clearing away? If so we would love to hear from you AND offer you free ice cream on the day!

In keeping with the ‘Fireman’ theme of the new play equipment, we will have a real fire engine and crew present (subject to being on call) to assist with the opening, at about 3.45pm.

There will be a variety of children’s activities and an ice cream stall.

Update 6th July 2013

Update 18th June 2013

PHASE I PARK IMPROVEMENTS
The drainage works are now nearly complete. Next week, the Fireman’s Tower play unit is due to be installed, together with safety matting and new turf. We are hoping that the park will re-open in early July.

CELEBRATION EVENT - FRIDAY 19th JULY
There will be an event in the park to celebrate the improvements, on Friday 19th July from 3.30-5pm. Entertainments and refreshments are being planned – details to follow. In the meantime, please make sure this is in your diary!

PLAYING OUT - WEDNESDAY 10th JULY
Breach Road (the street lying between the school and the park) is to close on Wednesday 10th July from 3.15-5.30pm, for a Playing Out session. This entails “outdoor child-led free play on the street and around the neighbourhood”, as promoted by http://playingout.net/ and has proved very popular in other streets.

To ensure the success of the event, the organisers are looking for volunteer stewards, working in pairs to steward the road closures, for one or more half-hour session. Please do get in touch if you could offer this very worthwhile help, or to find out more.

OPEN MEETING - TUESDAY 9th JULY
The next LImP meeting will be held in the Luckwell Pub at 8pm on Tuesday 9th July. This is an open meeting and all are welcome.

Please support the AGM

AGM – Tuesday 14th May 2013
Please show your support by coming along to our first Annual General Meeting. We’re looking forward to seeing you there to endorse the group’s activities and help launch us into our second year. The essential business is being kept short and to the point, after which there will be a chance to ask questions in a more informal vein.

The event is being held in the Green Room of the Tobacco Factory, BS3. It’s downstairs, near the bar. We will congregate from 7.30pm onwards to allow us to check membership details and for you to view the accounts and park plans if you wish. The meeting will start at 8pm prompt.

There is a complimentary refreshment offered to all members attending. Please come to the Green Room first to find out the code to be used at the bar.

MEMBERSHIP
If you follow LImP on Facebook or on the mailing list but have not yet joined as a member, please consider doing so. It’s free to join as a member and we very much hope you will wish to. To be able to vote at the AGM, you will need to be a member and while you could join on the night, it will make it easier for us if you could please mention it in advance. Please do get in touch.

AGENDA
The formal agenda is:
- Accounts and Treasurer’s Report
- Chairperson’s Annual Report
- Election of Trustees

After the close of business, there will be an opportunity to discuss Luckwell Park more informally.

ELECTION OF TRUSTEES
Could you be a trustee for the coming year? LImP is run by a committee of trustees which is responsible for decision making. This year’s trustees are required to resign and stand again for election if they wish – not all are standing again, so it is very much hoped that there will be some new trustees standing. We would wish to see as wide a representation as possible of the local community on the trusteeship. To find out what is involved, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Nominations for trustees are invited, with a deadline of 8pm on Sunday 12th May.

Update 17th February 2013

NEXT MEETING
Tuesday 19th February – open meeting in the Luckwell Pub (Luckwell Hotel) at 8pm - ALL WELCOME

LATEST MEETINGS
There was an open meeting on the evening of 22nd January 2013. The main matters discussed were:
* Clearance of overgrown plants by a Community Payback Team
* Gardening event in the park, scheduled for 20th April
* Bristol Parks Forum
* Phase I Improvements – Drainage and Play Equipment

There was an open meeting on the evening of 5th February 2013. The main matters discussed were:
* Play Equipment
* Improvements to drainage
* VOSCUR membership
* Taking down the LImP banner by the school gate for the time being
* ‘No Dogs’ signage
* Clearance of overgrown plants by Community Payback
* Gardening event (20th April)

CLEARANCE OF OVERGROWN PLANTS
The many plants which had invaded the wall below the hard court have now been cleared by a Community Payback team. This greatly improves the appearance of that part of park, gives better sightlines through the park, and saves the wall from further root damage.

PHASE I IMPROVEMENTS
Following the meeting on 22nd January, the trustees made revised recommendations for the spending of our current budget of £22,168. We anticipate spending £5000 on improvements to drainage in the play area, before proceeding to spend the remainder on a multi-use climbing frame. If funds allow, the anticipated new gate to the hard court will also be implemented.

Improvements to the drainage could involve one or more of the following: Complete/partial rain garden; perforated pipe network; raised plateau for play equipment; incorporating grit into surface of the park play area. It is considered prudent to implement this before the play equipment arrives.

GARDENING EVENT
Could you help at the gardening event on Saturday 20th April? We are looking for volunteers to help with setting up and/or putting away. It will run from 2-5pm. There will be a number of ‘hands-on’ activities aimed mainly, but not only, at tidying up the park, for both adults and children. There will also be a workshop for making hanging baskets to take home and brighten up the front gardens of the local streets. Refreshments are also planned.

We very much hope that LImP supporters will be able to help. If you can – even for a short time – please could you get in touch?

Update 13th January 2013

CLIMBING FRAME
The trustees are delighted that our longstanding wish for a new climbing frame in the play area looks set to become a reality in early Spring 2013.  Please see below for more details.
